For each question today (we focused on x3), students were taken through the process of using a split strategy, as well as using a build-up strategy. The class were then encouraged to use the strategy they felt the most comfortable with to complete word problems.
An example of using the build-up strategy for 3 x 126 =
2 x 100 = 200
2 x 20 = 40
2 x 6 = 12
200 + 40 + 12 = 252
252 + 126 =
200 + 100 = 300
50 + 20 = 70
2 + 6 = 8
300 + 70 + 8 = 378
